dc.description.abstract The issue of work/life balance has become increasingly prominent on the policy agenda. This paper uses a literature review to explore the effects of family-friendly policies on work/family balance. It also examines the role that trade unions have been playing in the provision of family-friendly policies. The paper concludes that practices such as parental leave, childcare, flexible working hours and part-time working generally promote work/family balance. Additionally it is shown that trade unions appear to help with work/family issues by increasing the availability of family-friendly policies, especially in large companies and public sector organizations. en
